An Autumn Walk in Ping Tom Park

Join host Chris Stacey for an exclusive celebration of the Fall season in Chinatown's Ping Tom Park. The plant palette in Ping Tom Park is expansive and vibrant in the fall. The trees will be at peak fall foliage. This tour touches upon some of the information we discussed in the past three tours (see below). The emphasis on this walk will be to experience Ping Tom Park as a traditional Chinese garden in the Autumn season. To slow down and experience how various "scenes" in the park unfold like a Chinese landscape painting. We will deepen our knowledge about how Ping Tom Park resembles traditional Chinese Gardens and also touch upon the concept of Shan Shui (山水) - the aesthetic tradition of embodying the landscape. Afterward you are welcome to join Chris for an early evening dinner in Chinatown.

First Three Walks: A brief discussion of the history of the park, its architecture, geographical, and botanical highlights. View the murals "All As One,” “Between The Mountains And The Water,” and “Be Like Water.” We'll enjoy the beauty of Gongshi (供石), also known as Taihu scholar’s rocks, found throughout the park. Discuss the historical significance of two major bridges seen from the park: the Pennsylvania Railroad Bridge 458 and the St. Charles Airline Bridge.
