Join Dr. Michael Shapiro in a discussion of Shakespeare's "The Tempest". First, Columbia alumni view a production of "The Tempest" on You Tube directed by George Shaeffer. This production was made for TV and stars Richard Burton, Maurice Evans, and Roddy Macdowell. On Wednesday, October 7, fellow alum Dr. Michael Shapiro, who received his PhD from Columbia and taught Shakespeare for over four decades at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, leads a discussion of the play. One of Shakespeare's last works, it is a revenge play where the avenger chooses to forgo revenge. It also raises postcolonial issues about the enslavement of indigenous people. It is a comedy, but in fact may be Shakespeare's most political play, dramatizing how power corrupts.
