Join host Daniel Balsam for the inaugural of “Teas, Tunes, & Topics.” Enjoy an entertaining evening of tea tasting, jazzy piano tunes, and a sensational discussion about musical conductors’ sartorial proclivities. First, we’ll start with a tea and macaroon tasting where you’ll hear a brief history of where the tea is produced and the production methods. Then, we’ll drink wine, eat appetizers, and listen to the captivating musical interpretations of jazz standards by pianist Jonathan Gross. Expect a lively dialogue between the audience and our evening’s musician. To end, we’ll discuss an article on what is appropriate dress for a conductor - one of this past opera season’s impassioned controversies.
Tea: Woojeon Jeju Organic, Jeju island, South Korea.

Topic: Hi-Brow, Low-Brow or In-Between? We read in advance and discuss the New York Times article “The Maestro Wore Blue” on Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the Metropolitan Opera’s music director, who wears custom-made outfits tailored to each production, challenging conservative norms. You will receive the article and selected reader responses via email.
